This is the famous Kings Lynn Gull that turned up in August 2000, compared to a Herring Gull taken in August 2001. The first and 3rd pictures are the KL Gull, the 2nd and 4th are a similarly plumaged Herring Gull.
Majority opinion among gull specialists is that it is a perfectly OK 1st summer male Caspian Gull. 1st summer is the least known plumage for Caspian Gull. I need to see more 1st summer Caspian Gulls before I can commit, until then, I cannot eliminate an intermediate bird. There is an article about this bird by Brian Small on Surfbirds here.
