Shoebox Swift Nestbox
This box is particularly easy to make. The dimensions are not critical, just make sure the width fits within the eaves. The material is 12mm weather-proof plywood. The entrance is 30mm wide by 70mm long. The brick effect on the example photograph below is created by using masking tape to define the mortar. Then paint the box with a mixture of Sandtex (3 parts) and sand (1 part), Sift coarse sand onto the wet paint. It becomes even more realistic if you daub other colours on the box, particularly reddish or brown colours, yielding the typical non-uniform colouration of many bricks. Remove the masking tape and paint the mortar, this time sifting finer sand onto the wet paint. A good colour is Sandtex 'mid-stone'.
To install, simply screw the back to the wall, and then screw the box to the back with the two side screws.
Do not install on a south-facing wall unless the eaves are sufficiently broad to shade the front of the box.
These boxes, erected before summer 2007 had their first breeding pair in the box on the right in 2009
